How to Break the Fast - Re-feeding

As my 21 day fast has come to an end I’ve outlined below the steps I took (as recommended by Dr Group) to gradually transition into eating food. As a general rule, the re-feeding process should take about half the time of the fast, so in my case about 10 days.

day 1 of Re-Feeding

at 6pm on the last day of the fast

  • Empty into 1 cup of water -

    • 2 caps Floratrex

    • 1 caps Latero-Flora

    • 1 caps Veganzyme

  • Drink this mixture straight down

  • Then eat 6 small cubes of watermelon very slowly, savouring the taste and texture

  • Drink more water to dilute it

  • Mix a liquid Multi Vitamin into 3 cups of water and sip slowly over the next hour

7.30pm

  • Eat a small amount of watermelon again + additional water

8.30pm

  • Mix about 1/4 cup raw green juice (I used kale, spinach, celery and cucumber - no fruit is preferable) into 3/4 cup water and drink it slowly over 10 minutes, adding 1 more caps of Floratrex and 1 more caps of Veganzyme

9.30pm

  • Empty 4 Oxy-Powder caps in water before bed and drink straight down

Day 2 of Re-Feeding

6.30am

  • Take the following still in their capsules this time -

    • 2 caps Floratrex

    • 1 caps Latero-Flora

    • 1 Caps Veganzyme

  • Eat about 10 small cubes of watermelon again, very slowly, taking about 20-30 mins to eat

  • Mix a liquid Multi Vitamin into 3 cups of water and sip slowly over the next hour

8.15am

  • Eat another small bowl of watermelon or papaya. Wait until liquid before swallowing.

10.00am

  • Drink very slowly a cup of diluted raw green juice, using water or coconut water to dilute

11.30am

  • More diluted green juice

1.00pm

  • Lunch - a small bowl of papaya or watermelon or mango

4.00pm

  • More green juice

7.00pm

  • Dinner - watermelon, blueberries, mango, 1/2 apple. Chew it all really well until liquified.

8.00pm

  • Another small bowl of fruit if feeling the need

9.00pm

  • 5 caps Oxy-Powder

  • 3 caps Floratrex

Day 3 of Re-feeding

6.30am

  • Take the following still in their capsules -

    • 2 caps Floratrex

    • 1 caps Latero-Flora

    • 1 Caps Veganzyme

  • Eat small cup blueberries very slowly

  • Mix a liquid Multi Vitamin into 3 cups of water and sip slowly over the next hour

9.00-10.00am

  • Drink 1 large glass of undiluted raw green juice

11.30am

  • More diluted green juice or herbal tea

1.00pm

  • Lunch - a small bowl of papaya or watermelon or mango or other fruit as desired

4.00pm

  • 2 cups undiluted green juice

7.00pm

  • Dinner - mango, grapes, or banana. Chew it all really well until liquified.

8.00pm

  • Another small bowl of fruit if feeling the need

9.00pm

  • 2 caps Oxy-Powder

  • 1 caps Floratrex

Days 4 - 10 of Re-feeding

NO MEAT, DAIRY, GRAINS, COFFEE, ALCOHOL

6.30am

  • Take the following still in their capsules -

    • 2 caps Floratrex

    • 1 caps Latero-Flora

    • 1 caps Veganzyme

    • Other supplements - iodine, B12

  • Eat small cup blueberries very slowly

  • Mix a liquid Multi Vitamin into 3 cups of water and sip slowly over the next hour

7.30am

  • Eat more fruit, adding in citrus, blackberries or banana - but ONLY 1 fruit at a time

9.00-10.00am

  • Drink 1 large glass of undiluted raw green juice. Can add in ACV or Aloe Vera if desired

11.30am

  • More diluted green juice or herbal tea or a handful of seeds (pecans, pumpkin, sunflower, walnuts)

1.00pm

  • Lunch - a small salad with organic veggies, sprinkled with raw seeds; or veggie soup or broth

4.00pm

  • 2 cups undiluted green juice or herbal tea

7.00pm

  • Dinner - gradually resume normal eating of very healthy, plant-based foods - stir-fries, soups, salads - keeping spices and condiments to a minimum in the initial days. Really listen closely to what your body is telling you about each new food item so you can tell if it is a potential problem.

9.00pm

  • 2 caps Oxy-Powder

  • 1 caps Floratrex

How I went using these guidelines

I followed Dr Group’s protocol very closely the first couple of days, then relaxed as my body very clearly told me when things weren’t quite right. I didn’t always follow his fruit suggestions, but learned to listen to what my body wanted. Mostly I craved savoury rather than sweet, so having to eat all this fruit again was a bit of a stretch!

I found his recommendation of 4-5 caps of Oxy-Powder each night much too harsh for my sensitive bowel and I had quite bad diarrhoea for the first 3 days as a result. I cut the dosage back to 2 caps then eventually on Day 5 back to none.

The liquid multi-vitamin I had used I found to be unpalatable mixed in water, so I ended up mixing it in with the green juice. I also used a commercial green juice after the first few days, mixing it with coconut water and Aloe Vera.

A few times, the food I had was too highly seasoned with spices which reactivated my acid reflux immediately. Good note to self about that!

I really enjoyed the whole process of chewing really slowly and have continued to take this habit into my everyday routine, now that I’m back to eating more normally. I also need far less quantity of food and I’m very mindful to listen to when Belle tells me she is full, and not over-ride her good judgement.


Where to from here?

As I proposed right at the start of this experiment, I plan to transition into a predominantly vegan keto dietary lifestyle. I’m busily planning how this will go as I return to my day job next week so stay tuned for updates on that as time goes by.

I will do one final update on the results of the fast as a whole in about a month, once things have settled down and returned to normal, whatever that is now!
